After graduating from high school Mae C. Jemison went to continue her education at Stanford University on a scholarship graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering. After Stanford she went to Cornell University to get a Doctorate in Medicine. Before Mae C, Jemison became an astronaut she was a doctor in the Peace Corps in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Jemison was selected from a pool of 2,000 to become an astronaut. On September 12, 1992 Mae became the first African American women in space. Jemison left NASA in March of 1993 and became a teacher at Dartmouth College. Jemison is the founder of her own company called Jemison Group. The purpose of the company is to seek encouragement for the love of science in students and to advance technology around the world. In 2013 Mae C. Jemison retired from her field of work.
