Jemison was born to a carpenter and roofer named Charlie Jamison, and an elementary school teacher named Dorthy (Green) Jemison. Mae C. Jamison had two siblings, her sister Ada Jemison Bullock is a child psychiatrist and her brother Charles Jemison is a real estate broker. The family moves to Chicago, Illinois when Mae was only three years old to live a better life. At the young age of sixteen Mae C. Jemison graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1973.
